AI Content Briefs for AEO: How to Brief Writers So ChatGPT and Google AI Cite You
Short answer: An AI content brief for AEO tells writers which buyer questions to answer, which entities to name, and which sources AI engines already cite. Moz Pro includes AI Content Briefs on Standard (2/mo), Medium (10/mo) and Large (50/mo), with AI Visibility tracking from $99/mo. Use briefs to ship cite-ready pages, not keyword stuffing.

What is an AI content brief for AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), also called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), is about earning mentions and citations inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. A classic SEO brief often stops at primary keyword, word count and a few H2s. An AI content brief for AEO goes further. It tells the writer:
- Which buyer prompts the page must answer in plain language.
- Which entities (brand, product, people, places, standards) must appear consistently.
- Which third-party sources AI engines already cite for that topic, so you can earn mentions or build better evidence.
- How to structure the page so an answer engine can extract a short, accurate summary.
- Which claims need named sources and which stats are off-limits unless verified.
Without that brief, writers produce readable articles that never get cited. With it, you give freelancers and in-house teams a checklist tied to how AI systems actually select sources.
Why do ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews cite some pages and ignore others?
AI answer engines do not rank pages the same way classic Google blue links do. Public guidance and practitioner experience point to a few repeat patterns:
- Direct answers early. Pages that state the answer in the first screen are easier to quote.
- Clear structure. Question-style headings, short paragraphs, tables and FAQ blocks help extraction.
- Entity consistency. The same company name, product name and author bio across your site and the wider web.
- Cited evidence. Stats with a named source and date beat vague claims.
- Third-party reinforcement. Mentions on sites the model already trusts raise your odds of appearing as a source.
Your brief should force those patterns into the draft before anyone starts writing. Tracking whether you appear for target prompts still needs a visibility tool. That is where Moz Pro's AI Visibility Dashboards and weekly prompt tracking sit beside its AI Content Briefs.
How do Moz Pro AI Content Briefs fit into an AEO workflow?
Moz Pro is a full SEO suite (Keyword Explorer, Link Explorer, Site Crawl, Domain Authority) that now lists AI and GEO features on Standard, Medium and Large plans. On Moz's pricing page (checked November 5, 2026), those plans include:
- AI Visibility Dashboards comparing your brand mentions in AI responses against competitors.
- Tracked prompts across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode, run weekly.
- AI Prompt Suggestions to find questions worth tracking.
- AI Overviews by Keyword for Google AI Overview presence.
- AI Sentiment Analysis.
- AI Content Briefs, with a monthly allotment that scales by plan.
The practical loop for a small marketing team looks like this:
- Pick 20 to 50 buyer prompts (for example, "best AI SEO agency for SaaS" or "how to get cited in ChatGPT").
- Track them in Moz's AI Visibility features to see who gets mentioned and which URLs get cited.
- Generate an AI Content Brief for the gaps where you are missing or weak.
- Brief the writer with the Moz output plus your own entity, proof and CTA rules.
- Publish, then re-check the same prompts on the next weekly run.
That keeps briefs tied to measured AI gaps instead of a random content calendar.
Moz Pro plans that include AI Content Briefs (checked Nov 5, 2026)
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | AI Visibility dashboards | Tracked prompts | AI Content Briefs / mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $99/mo | $79/mo | 3 | 150 | 2 |
| Medium | $179/mo | $143/mo | 6 | 300 | 10 |
| Large | $299/mo | $239/mo | 12 | 600 | 50 |
Add-ons: $50 per 100 extra prompts and $20 per extra AI Visibility dashboard. Moz also lists a Starter plan at $49/mo for a single site; AI Visibility features are not shown in the comparison for Starter, so confirm before buying if AEO briefs are your main goal.
Honest caveats: Prompt tracking is weekly, not daily. Moz lists three AI models on the plan comparison. If you need daily multi-engine tracking across Perplexity or Copilot as well, you may pair Moz with a dedicated tracker. For most small teams that already need SEO research plus cite-ready briefs, Standard or Medium is enough to start. → See Moz Pro plans
What should every AEO content brief include?
Whether you generate the seed brief in Moz or build it by hand, every brief you hand a writer should cover these blocks.
1. Target prompts and the short answer
List 3 to 7 prompts the page must win. Write a 40 to 60 word short answer the writer must place near the top. That short answer is what you hope ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews will paraphrase.
2. Primary entities and naming rules
Spell the brand, product, founder and any comparison brands exactly. Ban nicknames that split entity signals. If you sell "AI Visibility" as a product name, say so in the brief.
3. Required evidence and banned claims
List every stat the writer may use, with the source URL and the date it was last checked. Ban invented case studies. If you mention GPTPrompts.ai proof, label it as Bing Copilot citation appearances, not as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini share of voice.
4. Structure the AI can extract
Require:
- One H1 and question-style H2s.
- At least one comparison table when tools or plans are compared.
- A visible FAQ with 4 to 6 questions.
- A Sources section with named links.
- No placeholders, no em dashes, no vague "studies show" lines.
5. On-page SEO that still matters
Include the primary query, secondary phrases, internal links (for example to your audit or booking page), image alt text rules and a meta description draft. AEO does not replace crawlability, titles or internal links. It adds another layer on top.
6. CTA and commercial rules
State the soft CTA (book an audit, start a trial, compare a plan) and which affiliate or product links are allowed. For Revlift clients, that often means a soft path to the $500 AI Visibility Audit (founding price, credited to month 1) via https://www.revlift.co/book or Cal.com/michael-okeje-zlpys9.
How do you turn Moz AI Content Briefs into published pages that get cited?
Step 1: Map prompts to pages
One page should own one primary prompt cluster. Do not force "what is AEO", "best AEO tools" and "how to write AI content briefs" onto the same URL. Use Moz Keyword Explorer and AI Prompt Suggestions to separate clusters, then assign one brief per URL.
Step 2: Pull the Moz brief and enrich it
Export or copy the Moz AI Content Brief. Add your entity list, allowed stats, competitor URLs already being cited, and the short answer you want. Writers should not invent proof. If Moz surfaces cited domains for a prompt, note which ones you can earn a mention on (guest posts, data quotes, partnership pages) versus which ones you simply need to out-answer on your own site.
Step 3: Set a cite-ready outline
A practical outline for an AEO page:
- H1 matching the buyer question.
- Short answer (40 to 60 words).
- Disclosure if affiliates are used.
- Three or more question-style H2s.
- One table.
- Sources.
- FAQ.
- Optional JSON-LD for Article, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList.
Step 4: Edit for extractability
Before publish, check:
- Does the first screen answer the question without fluff?
- Are numbers dated and sourced?
- Do H2s match how people ask ChatGPT?
- Is the brand name spelled the same as on your About page and LinkedIn?
- Are affiliate links marked with
rel="sponsored nofollow noopener"?
Step 5: Measure and revise
After publish, track the page's target prompts in Moz on the next weekly cycle. If a competitor URL keeps winning the citation, update your short answer, table and sources rather than rewriting the whole post from scratch.
How do Moz AI Content Brief limits compare across plans?
| Need | Best Moz plan (Nov 5, 2026) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Testing AEO briefs on a few cornerstone pages | Standard ($99/mo or $79/mo yearly) | 2 AI Content Briefs/mo, 150 prompts, 3 dashboards |
| A content team shipping weekly AEO posts | Medium ($179/mo or $143/mo yearly) | 10 briefs/mo, 300 prompts, 6 dashboards |
| Agency or multi-brand publishing cadence | Large ($299/mo or $239/mo yearly) | 50 briefs/mo, 600 prompts, 12 dashboards |
| Extra prompt or dashboard headroom | Any paid plan + add-ons | $50 / 100 prompts; $20 / dashboard |
If you also need fast, reliable hosting for the sites you are optimizing, InMotion's Power shared plans start around $5.99/mo (renews higher) and VPS from about $9.99/mo. Hosting is secondary to briefs for this workflow; treat it as infrastructure, not the AEO strategy. → InMotion Hosting
What mistakes kill AEO briefs before the page is even drafted?
- Keyword-only briefs. "Write 1,800 words about AEO tools" produces generic copy AI engines skip.
- Unsourced stats. Models and editors both distrust round numbers with no date or vendor page.
- Fabricated case studies. Invented clients destroy trust and create legal risk. Stick to first-party proof you can defend.
- Ignoring cited sources. If every AI answer cites the same three domains, your brief must either beat their answer quality or plan how to earn a mention there.
- No short answer. Writers bury the point in intro fluff. Force a 40 to 60 word block at the top.
- Wrong CTA density. One clear commercial path beats five competing buttons.

Frequently asked questions
What is an AI content brief for AEO?
An AI content brief for AEO is a writer-facing document that lists the buyer prompts to answer, the short answer to place near the top, required entities, allowed evidence, page structure (tables, FAQ, sources) and commercial rules. Its goal is a page that answer engines can cite, not just a page that ranks for a keyword.
How do Moz Pro AI Content Briefs work?
Moz Pro includes AI Content Briefs as part of its AI and GEO feature set on Standard, Medium and Large plans. Teams use them alongside AI Visibility Dashboards and weekly tracked prompts across GPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode. You generate a brief for a topic or gap, then enrich it with your own proof and CTA rules before assigning it to a writer.
How many AI Content Briefs do you get with Moz Pro?
As of November 5, 2026, Moz lists 2 AI Content Briefs per month on Standard, 10 on Medium and 50 on Large. Confirm the current allotment on Moz's pricing page before you buy, because plan details can change.
What should you include in a brief so AI engines cite the page?
Include a 40 to 60 word short answer, question-style headings, a comparison table when relevant, named sources with dates, consistent entity names, a visible FAQ and no unsourced stats. Also research which third-party URLs already get cited for your prompts so you can compete with or earn mentions on those sources.
Do AI content briefs replace SEO keyword research?
No. You still need keyword research, crawlable pages, internal links and technical SEO. AI content briefs add prompt coverage, extractable structure and citation-minded evidence on top of that foundation. Moz Pro is useful here because it combines classic SEO tools with AI Visibility and AI Content Briefs in one suite.
Should I use Moz Pro or hire an agency for AEO briefs?
Use Moz Pro if you have writers who can follow a strict brief and you want to own the workflow. Hire Revlift if you want the audit, brief writing, publishing and tracking handled as a service. Many teams start with the $500 AI Visibility Audit, then decide.
