How to get your brand cited by ChatGPT

To get cited by ChatGPT, you need to be discoverable to its web search, easy to extract from, and corroborated across the open web. ChatGPT pulls live sources when it answers, and it favors pages that state clear answers, have strong entity signals, and are referenced consistently elsewhere. Here's how to earn a spot.

1. Make sure ChatGPT can crawl you

ChatGPT's browsing uses OpenAI's crawler. If your robots.txt blocks OAI-SearchBot or GPTBot, you've opted out of citations. Allow them, and make sure your key pages are server-rendered and fast, content hidden behind heavy client-side rendering is harder to read.

2. Answer the question in the first two sentences

ChatGPT quotes the part of your page that directly answers the prompt. Lead with the answer, then explain. A page titled "Best X for Y" should say which and why up top, not after a 500-word intro. This single change moves more citations than any technical tweak.

3. Build your entity

ChatGPT needs to understand what your brand is. Strengthen this with:

  • A clear, consistent description of your product everywhere you appear.
  • Presence on the sources models lean on, your own site, plus reviews, directories, and reputable third-party mentions.
  • Structured data (Organization, Product, FAQ schema) so machines parse you correctly.

4. Get corroborated

Models trust claims that appear in more than one credible place. A single self-published claim is weak; the same fact echoed across your site, a review platform, and an independent article is strong. This is why third-party mentions matter so much for AEO.

5. Target the prompts, not just keywords

Write down the actual questions buyers ask ChatGPT about your category ("best [category] for [use case]", "alternatives to [competitor]", "is [tool] good for [job]"). Build or reshape pages that answer those questions directly. See how to measure AI visibility to track which ones you're winning.

6. Keep it fresh

Models prefer current information. Pages with visible, recent updates and current-year data get cited more than stale ones. Revisit your top answer pages quarterly.

The repeatable loop

  1. List 10–20 buyer prompts.
  2. Check which ones already cite you (and who they cite instead).
  3. Fix or create the answer page for each gap using the AEO checklist.
  4. Re-check in a few weeks; double down on what moved.
