How to show up in Perplexity (and get cited as a source)
Perplexity shows numbered citations next to every answer, which makes it the clearest place to start AEO. To get cited, your page needs to be crawlable, directly answer the query, and carry the kind of structured, verifiable claims Perplexity likes to footnote. Because it surfaces sources so transparently, you can also see exactly who's winning and reverse-engineer it.
Why start with Perplexity
Unlike a chat that hides its reasoning, Perplexity puts its sources right there as [1] [2] [3]. That gives you a fast feedback loop: search your target prompts, see who gets cited, and study the pages that win. It's the best training ground for AEO.
What Perplexity rewards
- Crawlable, fast pages. Allow
PerplexityBotinrobots.txt. Server-render your important content. - Direct answers. It quotes the sentence that answers the query. Put it first.
- Verifiable, specific claims. Numbers, dates, named facts, and clear comparisons get cited more than vague prose.
- Freshness. Perplexity leans current; recently updated pages have an edge.
- Topical depth. A site that covers a topic thoroughly earns more trust than a single thin page.
A simple way to win citations
- Search your top 10 buyer prompts in Perplexity yourself.
- For each, note the sources it cites and what format they use (listicle? definition? comparison? data?).
- Build a better, more directly-answering version of that format on your site.
- Make sure the answer is in the first lines and backed by a specific, checkable claim.
- Re-run the searches in a few weeks.
Don't ignore the corroboration layer
Perplexity, like other engines, trusts claims that appear across multiple sources. Reviews, directories, and third-party articles that reference your brand all increase the odds it cites you when your category comes up.
